- Utilities need to be properly disconnected. Utility companies for gas, water, and electricity need to be contacted. Again, this may be handled by your hired demolition company, but clarify upfront with the contractor all of the services that are provided.
- Older homes or buildings need to be inspected for hazardous materials like asbestos or lead paint prior to being demolished. - Safely tear down the building. For one to three story structures like a shed, garage, or a home, demolition of the structure is usually achieved using large hydraulic equipment like cranes, excavators and/or bulldozers.

If you are not sure whether getting rid of the old home is really your best option you can consult with a building professional. Estimated Costs of Complete Tear Down
If you are considering a complete tear down but want to leave the foundation or basement of a home that ranges between 800 to 1,500 square feet you can expect to spend between $3,000 and $8,000 dollars. This is for homes located in areas of the United States that are low cost such as in the Midwest. This estimated price includes debris removal. In areas that are more affluent such as in big cities you can expect to spend between $7,000 and $15,000.
Demolishing a home and removing the foundation or basement will cost a bit more. The price ranges from $10,000 to $25,000 and depends on the materials, whether the home is one or two stories, the rates of local contractors for similar work and how easily the home is accessed. Remember the total cost will increase if there is lead paint or asbestos in the home.
Partial Demolition
If you have a garage that isn’t attached and has outlived its usefulness you can expect to spend between $1,000 up to $10,000 depending on the location and what it is you are tearing down. Other Costs to Consider
If you are required to get a permit prior to demolition you can expect to pay $25 to $100 for each permit and could go as high as several thousands of dollars. In Chicago, for example, the cost of a permit to demolish an existing home will cost you up to $10,000 for the permit because of their local rules. In addition utility companies may charge for a service call if they have to come out.
Remember when considering whether or not to demolish a home you need to consult with the local government for permits and with the utility companies to abandon all power lines. Demolishing a home can be a great money saver if you have many costly repairs that need done in order to make the dwelling livable once again.

High reach demolition excavators are more often used for tall buildings where explosive demolition is not appropriate or possible. Excavators with shear attachments are typically used to dismantle steel structural elements. Hydraulic hammers are often used for concrete structures and concrete processing attachments are used to crush concrete to a manageable size, and to remove reinforcing steel. For tall concrete buildings, where neither explosive or high reach demolition with an excavator is safe or practical, the “inside-out” method is used, whereby remotely operated mini-excavators demolish the building from the inside, whilst maintaining the outer walls of the building as a scaffolding, as each floor is demolished.
To control dust, fire hoses are used to maintain a wet demolition. Hoses may be held by workers, secured in fixed location, or attached to lifts to gain elevation.
Loaders or bulldozers may also be used to demolish a building. They are typically equipped with “rakes” (thick pieces of steel that could be an I-beam or tube) that are used to ram building walls. Skid loaders and loaders will also be used to take materials out and sort steel.
The technique of Vérinage is used in France to weaken and buckle the supports of central floors promoting the collapse of the top part of a building onto the bottom resulting in a rapid, symmetrical, collapse.[1]
