5 Need-to-know tips for maximizing your office recycling program

May 23, 2016

Offices were traditionally a major source of paper waste, a pain that has been alleviated to some extent by technology. But waste ranging from unneeded print-outs to food and beverage containers still piles up in workplaces. The worst part: many offices do not have clear recycling policies. To help your workplace put those empty energy drink cans and coffee cups to better use, consider implementing an office recycling program (or improving your existing one). It’s easy, and it gets the whole company thinking about ways to reduce your environmental impact. Here are five helpful tips to turn recycling into second nature for your employees.

Tip #1: Have appropriate office recycling containers.

Without well-marked and conveniently-located recycling containers, employees may end up throwing recyclables in with the garbage. You can hardly blame them – during the course of a busy day, thinking about where to throw their trash is low on most employees’ priority lists. Fortunately, a variety of affordable recycling containers are available to encourage employees to put their refuse in the right place. Arwood Waste offers containers in sizes ranging from large-capacity bins for an entire office to under-desk sliders that allow you to equip each employee with a personalized recycling bin! With well-marked recycling containers placed at convenient intervals, it’s easy to remember to toss that cardboard coffee sleeve in the bright blue bin instead of the garbage container.

Tip #2: Use posters to explain recycling rules.

Recycling rules vary by location, and employees may not know what’s recyclable and what should be thrown away. Posting lists of recyclable materials in kitchen areas or printing kiosks will let employees know what’s okay to recycle (for example, aluminum cans, cardboard containers, and used printer paper) and what should be thrown in the trash (food waste, plastic wrap, etc.). Encourage employees to read the signs before chucking their lunch garbage or unwanted paper items. Before long, everyone will know the recycling rules by heart.

Tip #3: Regularly reinforce the office recycling program.

Regular communication is important in order for your recycling program to work. Notice some people breaking the rules? A gentle companywide reminder can reinforce the recycling policy and get everyone back on track. On the other hand, if you notice workers making a conscious effort to follow the program, praise everybody for their successful recycling efforts. Providing your staff with an estimate of how much trash they have saved from landfills is a big motivator.

Tip #4: Inform janitorial staff of the recycling program.

Your team may be dutifully following your recycling program, but if the custodial staff is not on board, everything may end up in the garbage after all. Be sure to inform your cleaning crew about the recycling program, and encourage them to follow it as well. If a recycling or disposal company will be in charge of collecting your bins, make sure the cleaning crew is aware of where to put the recyclables. Your program will only be 100% effective if all members of your company are on the same page.

Tip #5: Encourage employees to reuse.

Recycling is an excellent practice, but it doesn’t solve all problems. Ask employees to carry reusable water bottles that can be filled from a central water cooler, and suggest that they bring washable dishes and utensils instead of throw-away items. Also encourage workers to use both sides of a piece of paper before recycling it. If an item can be used several times before recycling it (for example, re-filling a disposable drink bottle), that can make a big difference over the course of a year. Get employees thinking about ways they can reduce waste overall while using best recycling practices to responsibly dispose of unavoidable waste. You’ll feel better about your company’s environmental impact – and your employees will feel good knowing they have done their part for a cleaner world.

Jacksonville Humane Society Demolition On Beach Boulevard

May 19, 2016

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Humane Society will begin demolition on its Beach Boulevard property on Thursday, which prepares groundbreaking for the new shelter building scheduled to open in the spring of 2017.

At approximately 43,000 square feet, the new building will feature indoor, climate-controlled housing for all animals and connect to the current JHS Community Animal Hospital, which was built in 2012.

“Each day we take another exciting step towards our much-needed new building,” said Denise Deisler, JHS executive director. “The most important part of this project is ensuring that the public knows JHS will be open throughout construction. We are committed to finding families for the same number of homeless pets as we have in previous years.”

Demolition is the next phase of construction for the new JHS Adoption and Education Center after a fire destroyed the shelter buildings and claimed the lives of 86 animals in 2007.

The buildings to be demolished include a small house, which most recently served as the administration building, the former warehouse and one section of outdoor dog kennels. Demolition is scheduled for approximately 9 a.m. Thursday.

Mobile Home Demolition Jacksonville’s Westside

Everything from house demolition to smaller structural wrecking and removal like sheds, garages, decks, etc. can be taken care of. Hire a professional who knows what permits and requirements are in place to free your space up for something new.

Mobile Home Demolition Costs

The word “mobile” is probably not accurate when describing a home manufactured to HUD standards. “Expensive to move” would be better. Unlike a travel trailer, that can be hitched up to a tow vehicle and on the road in less than an hour, moving a mobile home involves significant labor, materials, and fees.

Moving a single-wide manufactured home a short distance in Florida costs a minimum of $3,000. Additional expenses such as preparing the interior of the home for the move, moving furniture and housewares separately from the home, and site prep work at the new location, can add thousands of dollars more. Double the cost for a double-wide. Prices can vary dramatically between moving contractors, and it is not unusual to spend $20,000 or more to move a mobile home.

Here is a summary of some of the costs:

  1. BulletPermit and inspection to move home from county where it is located.

  2. BulletHighway transport permits.

  3. BulletLiability and property damage insurance for the duration of the move, carried by the moving contractor.

  4. BulletIf the home is older, repairs may be necessary to make it safe to transport.

  5. BulletRemoval of entry stairs, decks and porch roofs.

  6. BulletDisconnect package air conditioner and main supply and return ducts.

  7. BulletDisconnect utilities.

    1. BulletRemoval of skirting.

    2. BulletA mobile home bounces around as it heads down the highway at 50-miles per hour. Crosswinds buffet it sideways and the suspension is minimal. All interior and exterior breakables—especially glass—should be removed to avoid damage in transit. This includes light fixtures, furniture, housewares and glass cabinet doors. Doors and toilet seats secured.

    3. BulletInstall tow hitch, axles and tires. Remove piers and tie-downs.

    4. BulletPrep new site for home, including electric and water service. Grading of site to avoid standing water below home, paving of driveway, new well, septic tank, drainfield, and power pole may be necessary if not in mobile home community.

    5. BulletPermit and inspection for moving home to new county location.

    6. BulletTow home to new location, including escort car. Move furniture, light fixtures, and other interior breakables, reusable equipment such as package air conditioner, stairs and skirting in separate vehicles to new location.

    7. BulletInstall new piers and tie-downs.

    8. BulletRemove tow hitch, axles and tires.

    9. BulletIf the home is a double-wide, align, reconnect and seal the two halves of home at the marriage line.

    10. BulletConnection of utilities by licensed electrician and plumber.

    11. BulletInstall package air conditioning unit and main supply and return ducts.

    12. BulletInstallation of entry stairs, decks and porch roofs.

    13. BulletInstallation of skirting. Some skirting from old location may be reusable.

    14. BulletReinstall furniture, light fixtures, and other breakables in home.

While some of the work can be done by a homeowner that’s handy with tools, such as removing and reinstalling the skirting, most of it requires paid professionals. Less than one out of five manufactured homes are moved from their original location. The cost and inconvenience of moving a mobile home means that it often makes more sense to sell the home you live in and buy another one where you want to relocate rather moving your current manufactured home.
If you are buying a used mobile home that must be moved as part of the deal, be sure to factor in the moving expenses before you decide whether it’s worth the price. Also, the condition and expected additional lifespan of a “free” mobile home, especially, should be carefully evaluated before attempting to move it.

Demolition of Jacksonville FL Animal Hospital

May 16, 2016

Another Happy customer! Arwood Waste completed the total  Demolition of the Old Julington Creek Animal Hospital.

Office, bank, professional

• Julington Creek Animal Walk, 12075 San Jose Blvd., contractor is Osterer Construction Co., renovation and open ceiling, $24,500.

Jerry Fixel Inc. remains named after its founder, who began his career as a crafter of wooden boats and airplane structures, back in the era when canvas was stretched over wooden frames, and who started his first construction business when still a teenager.  Although he went on to build large scale structures such as railroad sidings and processing plants, his devotion to perfection and detail never changed.  In the final phase of his career he designed and built, one at a time and almost single handedly, entire streets of houses in Mandarin.

Michael Fixel, President of Jerry Fixel Inc. and licensor of both companies, is a graduate of Columbia University, but equally values his time in the field as a carpenter.  He has been honored with commissions to design and build the personal homes of engineers, with their intense focus on the technical, and financial consultants, with their focus on value, on the river, on the ocean, and in the most prestigious neighborhoods in Jacksonville, and has been selected many times to oversee construction of major commercial projects, including control of the design process.

Michael also provides construction management services, evaluates buildings prior to purchase, and has served as an expert witness.

Morrie Osterer, President of Osterer Construction, is a graduate of Stony Brook University. Aside from extensive experience in work for the government and hospitals, he is especially proud of unique projects such as the authentic Cambodian Buddhist Temple built on the Southside, and a 30,000 sq.ft  buildout for the FBI.   As part of his charitable activities, Morrie acted as liaison and coordinator for a $5,000,000 addition to River Garden Retirement Home.

Concrete Pad Removed 2430 Wattlebank Tree R W

May 12, 2016

Another happy customer in Jackosnville Florida!

Frank Wilbanks

2430 Wattle Tree R W

Jacksonville FL. 32246

Concrete is great stuff, and it deserves its title as King of Building Materials, but some homebuilders (and remodelers) can use it to excess. If you’d like to look out your backdoor and see wildflowers and herbs instead of a sweltering gray slab, you’ll be glad to know that while this is a backbreaking job, it’s not skilled work.

Project Scope

Remove of a concrete pad including the landscape timbers and deliver, spread and track in clean fill dirt.

How Concrete Breaks

Concrete is strong, but it’s also brittle. You can hammer all day at the center of a slab—where the concrete is evenly supported—with no appreciable effect. But if you hammer at the edge of the slab, where the ground underneath can shift or be displaced a little, the concrete will break. This is because you’re essentially bending the concrete, which is it’s main weakness. If you want to break up a large piece of concrete for removal, pry up one end and set it down on some rubble or a scrap of timber, then strike the piece in the center.

Options for Removing Concrete

The following are the three main methods for homeowners, from easiest to hardest. Talk to your trash removal company and local dumps to learn about options for getting rid of the concrete rubble and gravel subbase.

If You Need to Cut the Concrete

If you want keep some of the slab intact (perhaps to create an “island” planting bed or to protect surrounding structures), you can rent a walk-behind concrete wet saw (with a diamond blade) like the pros use to cut through slab. Make the cuts before demolishing the rest of the slab, and follow the manufacturer’s and rental company’s instructions carefully. As mentioned, you can also hire out this work.

Prepping the Ground for Plants

Most plants need at least 6 to 12 inches of healthy soil for growth, plus 1 to 2 inches of mulch (if applicable). Dig your planting area to the appropriate depth, then fill it with the recommended blend of soil for your area and planting goals. The best resource for specific recommendations is a local extension service (or a master gardener or landscaper, if you happen to know one).
