Demolition scheduled, but still no plans for cineplex

A demolition permit was issued by the building inspector’s office on Aug. 11 to raze three existing buildings on the site, according to Tom St. Pierre, the city’s chief building inspector.

“They’re going to clean up the site,” St. Pierre said. “It’s just cleanup and demo of the buildings out there.”

The site has played a central role in a tumultuous conversation about traffic, development and various other issues for the area for 2 1/2 years now. The basic cineplex proposal was initially unveiled in January 2015, but it hasn’t made much progress since then.

Cleanup of 77 tons of trash from Private Property – Duval County, FL

August 30, 2017

Kirby told the Herald after the meeting that Todd Gomez is point of contact for the property, which is family-owned. He said Gomez is a nice guy and did make some attempt to comply with the judge’s order, including hauling off some junk cars that were on the property. But, even after that — and serving some time in jail for the nuisance offense — Gomez fell short of compliance.

City employees from the public works and police departments spent three days cleaning the large plot of land, which is zoned as a trailer court.

“We hauled 77.47 tons of garbage from the lot,” Kirby said. “It was 38 city dump-truck loads hauled out, including 68 tires, 12 refrigerators, a freezer (unplugged) full of rotten meat and several other appliances.”

During the three-day cleanup, three dump trucks, three loaders and one backhoe were used — plus several city employees who spent 21 hours working on the property.

To give perspective to the work done on this property, Kirby said during the five-day annual city cleanup, a total of 57 dump loads were hauled off.

Jacksonville, Ortega River Home Demolition Completed

August 10, 2017

The property’s checkered history includes at least two previous demolition orders under previous owners and widespread neglect over the last three decades. A dilapidated carriage house behind the home was demolished due to safety concerns years ago.

Despite not having owned the house then, Leksich said he was held responsible for that bill.

At one point, ARCH, Fort Wayne’s nonprofit historic architecture preservation group, tried to save the house but gave up. Members of the city’s Historic Preservation Commission board voted to allow demolition to go forward in April, in part because the house had lost so many features, including a tower.
