March 17, 2017

St Patrick's Day - Arwood Waste - (888) 413-5105 Toll Free – Dumpster, Residential Roll Off Dumpster, Front Load Equipment, Commercial Dumpster, Construction Dumpsters and Demolition – Free Quote

Don’t get green this St. Patrick’s Day from too much trash laying around

Allow Arwood Waste and our partners the pleasure of helping you go green by providing you with quality waste management services this holiday weekend.

Here are three tips for Going Green this Spring:

1. Recycle

Not only does recycling paper and plastic help the environment, it saves room in your trash can – saving you money at your weekly trash pick up.

2. Compost

Throw scraps in your compost rather than your kitchen can. Your trash won’t stink and your plants and gardens will grow healthy and vibrant. It’s a win-win!

3. Walk or Ride Your Bike

Save some money, keep the air clean, and get some exercise – all at the same time.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Arwood Waste!

NAS (JAX) Naval Base Demolition Completed for Whitesell-Green, Inc.

March 14, 2017

Removing Stucco Siding & NAS Military Base

Arwood Waste performed a selective demolition of concrete stucco from the side of a commercial building located at NAS Jackosnville Naval base!

There may be a time when you need to remove the stucco siding on your home. There could be many reasons for this, but if done correctly the job can be done easily with few complications.

That does not mean that removing stucco siding is going to be quick process. In fact, removing stucco siding from a home is a long, tedious and labor-intensive project. Stucco is a very durable cement product that can last for over 50 years. It is not going to come off easily.

Safety Precautions

Before attempting to remove any of the stucco siding on your home, consider some safety precautions:

  • Remove all obstacles from the general area. Tripping over garbage and pieces of debris is a leading cause of injury on a job site.
  • Keep an eye out for falling debris. There is always an inherent danger of something falling on you. Stay aware of your surroundings.
  • Work with a friend. Removing stucco is hard work and requires quite a bit of elbow grease. Work with a friend to avoid over exertion or becoming so focused on your job that you forget your surroundings.

Needed Tools For Removing Stucco Siding

  • Circular saw with carbide blade
  • Pry bar
  • Hammer
  • Safety equipment (gloves, boots, eye protection, face mask)

First Cuts

Whether tackling a small section or large surface area, the first step in removing stucco siding is a small cut. Most people will want to get out the sledgehammer and start pounding away at the cement product. This is the last thing you should do. In fact, you should leave the sledgehammer in the garage for this project.

Start by using a chisel and hammer to knock off any loose stucco siding that you may see in the general area. This goes for stucco above your head. When prying off large sections of stucco, and the following layer of stucco lath, simply jar the pieces loose and let them fall.

Harder Blows

After scraping off the loose stucco, you can begin to land harder blows to the surface with the hammer. This can loosen the stucco from the home surface and cause some cracks.

Pry Larger Sections Off

As you begin to see cracks and pieces falling off, you can start using the pry bar or a shovel to begin taking off larger sections.

  • Important Note – Before getting too carried away with the demolition of stucco, you must remember that it is a work area. Large chunks can be very heavy and even cause other sections to fall.

As you work, lifting off these bigger sections, remove them immediately from the area. Do not leave lying on the ground as an obstacle to trip over.

Building Demolition Completed for Waste Pro of Jacksonville

March 6, 2017

Demolition Completed located at 127 Willow Branch St.

The property was leveled and most of the waste was recycled. The project consisted of a Concrete structure, a 4oft. storage box and miscellaneous scrap metal. The project was completed within three days.

Building Demolition Process

Different steps are involved in the process of demolition of building structures which are:

  1. Surveying
  2. Removal of hazardous materials
  3. Preparation of plan
  4. Safety measures

Surveying of Buildings for Demolition

Surveying means study of different parameters of the structure and its surroundings. There are two types of surveying are mainly conducted. They are

  1. Building surveying
  2. Structural surveying

1. Building Surveying

In survey of buildings for demolition, following process are carried out:

  • Types of construction material used
  • Usage of building prior and present during demolition.
  • The presence of wastewater, hazardous materials, matters arising from toxic chemicals, flammable or explosive and radioactive materials, etc.
  • Drainage conditions and possible problems on water   pollution, flooding and erosion.
  • Shared facilities with adjoining building, including common staircases, partition walls.
  • Adjoining pedestrian and vehicular traffic conditions
  • The sensitivity of neighborhood with respect to noise, dust, vibration and traffic impact.

2. Structural Surveying

In structural survey, following process are involved in demolition:

  • The method of construction
  • The structural system and structural conditions of basements, underground tanks or underground vaults.
  • The original structural system employed in the design.
  • The condition of the building.

Removal of Hazardous Materials

If hazardous materials like asbestos minerals, petroleum contamination, and radioactive metals are found in the investigation of site for demolition. Specialized personals are called for the removal of the hazardous materials from the site prior to the demolition of structure.

Preparation of Demolition Plan for Structures

A detailed demolition plan is made which illustrates the different process involved and they are:

 Demolition completed in Lackawanna Neighborhood

Lackawanna originally saw growth as a streetcar suburb that was an attractive residential location for workers employed at the nearby massive Seaboard Air Line Shops and Terminals.Although the streetcar line and railroad shops are long gone, the community that owes its existence to them still lives on.
The date of the first West Jax Yard has to be in post Civil War Florida boom. 1880’s. Seaboard bought into the F&J and also the line from Union Station to Chattahoochee about 1888. The shops date from the 1890’s to 1920 when the 3rd and final Union Station opened. The facility employed as many as 1,000 workers in 1909.

The diesel shops were built in the WWII years. By the end of the war, a new 165 foot turntable was in place at the steam shops. The yards were greatly increased both in the circa “teens” and again in the late “40’s”. Seaboard was already pioneering their demise. The Gross Cut-Off to Callahan and Baldwin were taking more and more freight through without another sort.

The shops became the home for almost all of the SEABOARD “ALCO” (American Locomotive Works) and “BALDWIN” diesels. The last of these, Alco, quit the business starting with a sell to Worthington Corp in 1964, they built their last diesels in the early 70’s. They were then folded into Studebaker-Worthington subsidiary MONTREAL loco works. But MLW, didn’t get any US orders from SCL.

As a specialist in Alco and Baldwin locomotives, WEST JAX did it all. These engines had one other thing that EMD (GM), or GE diesels lacked. Pound for pound it was said they could pull the socks off an equal power locomotive from the latter builders. They could also track better, and SCL wasn’t known for good track – sadly CSX still suffers from this mind set. Hundreds of miles of branchlines in your home town area were — HORRIBLE. But an old Alco would somehow dance along the rails with the train, another locomotive would be up to the foot plates in dirt.

When Rice Yard opened in Waycross, it was really Jacksonville’s yard moved to a less congested junction. That move coupled with massive post regulation abandonment’s spelled the end of West Jax. Remember railyards are train, time AND money killers.

WEST JAX is now a superfund site, home of CSX security – Railroad Police, train dispatching, and the company’s office train cars.

Relocation Demolition These mitigation options can be more effective than other mitigation methods because they provide the opportunity to relocate or rebuild in an area outside of the floodplain. If rebuilding outside the floodplain is not possible, then moving to less vulnerable locations (i.e., from Zone V to a Zone A) on the same property or on a new property is also an option. If neither rebuilding outside the floodplain or in a less vulnerable location is feasible, elevation may be your best option. Elevation is described in detail in Chapter 5. This chapter addresses relocation outside of the floodplain.
